ift-ts:web:ift:2026q2-duty

Description

This commitment covers a weekly duty rotation: each week, one team member is responsible for monitoring channels, acknowledging incoming messages, and triaging or routing feature requests and bugs that arrive ad hoc. Everyone who is not on duty that week should have uninterrupted focus for larger tasks that need deeper research and sustained attention—without a constant stream of channel interruptions.

The duty rotation supports IFT’s strategic objectives by:

  • Responsiveness: Keeping community and internal stakeholders unblocked when issues surface outside planned project milestones
  • Triage discipline: Turning informal requests into tracked work (issues, backlog items, or handoffs to the right owner)
  • Deep work protection: Preserving multi-day focus for complex work by time-boxing duty to weekly rotations
  • Shared ownership: Balancing operational load across the team through a clear rotation
  • Signal vs noise: Surfacing recurring themes so they can feed maintenance, roadmap, and product planning

Scope:

  • Rotation cadence: duty rotates weekly (calendar handoff at an agreed day/time); primary (and backup if used) are named for each week
  • On duty: monitor designated channels during that week, acknowledge, classify, and route work
  • Off duty: prioritize project commitments and larger tasks that require deeper research; avoid context-switching into channel firefighting except for emergencies or explicit escalation
  • Triage quality: when something cannot be solved in the moment, capture overarching scope (what the request really implies), possible considerations (risks, dependencies, alternatives), and follow-ups (who should pick it up, next milestone, or backlog link)
  • Acknowledge and classify requests (bug vs feature vs question vs duplicate)
  • Create or link GitHub issues, assign labels, and escalate when needed
  • Coordinate with maintenance and demos commitments where relevant; duty does not replace dedicated project work but complements it
